Skin Acne Prevention Tip #1 Leave Your Skin Alone
- Do not touch your face or other skin prone to acne.
- Do not squeeze, pop, or pick at pimples.
- Do not use masks, toners, or astringents. They will irritate your skin and worsen your acne.
- Do not exfoliate. Just as with scrubbing, exfoliating is not good for acne prone skin.
- Rubbing alcohol will not dry up oily skin or acne breakouts. Do not use it.
- Do not tan.
- Stay away from hair care products containing oil.
Skin Acne Prevention Tip #2 Mild Cleansing is Best
- Choose or ask your dermatologist to recommend a mild acne cleanser. Make sure the cleanser does not contain alcohol.
- Wash your face once in the morning and once at night.
- Wash after perspiring. Perspiration can worsen acne fast.
- Wash with your fingers instead of with a washcloth or sponge to reduce irritation.
- Do not scrub your skin. Scrubbing will irritate your skin and worsen acne.
- Do not rinse your face with hot or cold water. Lukewarm water is best.
- If you hair is oily, shampoo it daily.
Skin Acne Prevention Tip #3 Use Noncomedogenic Products
- Moisturizer helps to "calm" irritated skin. Choose an oil-free,
noncomedogenic moisturizer. Apply acne treatment medication before
applying moisturizer.
- It is fine to wear makeup when undergoing acne treatment as long
as you use noncomedogenic products that will not clog your pores. Apply
acne treatment medication before applying makeup.
Skin Acne Prevention Tip #4 Shave Carefully
- Wet your face with lukewarm before shaving to soften facial hair.
- A sharp blade is best.
- If a blade razor is aggravating your acne, try an electric razor.
- Never, ever, try to shave the acne bumps off your face. It is not
an effective acne treatment. It will end in a bloody mess and will only
make your acne problems worse than before.
Skin Acne Prevention Tip #5 Get Out of the Sun
- Use a noncomedogenic sunscreen of at least SPF 15 that provides
protection from UVA-A and UVA-B rays as part of your acne treatment.
Reapply as directed or after perspiring or swimming. Apply acne
treatment medication before applying sunscreen.
- Do not use tanning beds.
- Wear clothes to protect you from the sun. For example, hats, sunglasses, long-sleeved shirts, and more.
- Sit in the shade, especially between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
